Ft. Jackson soldier dies

A Minnesota Army National Guard Soldier stationed at Fort Jackson died last week.

Pvt. Connor J. McGurran, 19, was found unresponsive during morning wake up at a field location.

Fort Jackson medical responders immediately transported the soldier to Providence Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family members and teammates of the deceased soldier. We are providing every comfort and assistance that we can to all involved,” said U.S. Army Training Center and Fort Jackson Commander Brig. Gen. Milford H. Beagle, Jr.

An investigation into the cause of the death is being conducted.

Man charged after leaving guns on school campus

A Lexington man is accused of having weapons on school property after guns were found in a bag at Lexington High.

Brent Wilson Skinner, 48, was charged Jan. 9 with carrying weapons on school grounds, according to an arrest warrant.

“Based on the information we gathered Tuesday, Skinner was exercising around the school campus during the early morning hours before students arrived,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Two handguns were in a bag he left in a school parking lot after his workout.”

A student eventually noticed the bag and opened it to identify its owner, according to Koon.

“Once the student saw 2 guns were inside, he notified an administrator and our school resource officer became involved,” Koon said.

Skinner turned himself in Thursday morning.

He’s being held in the Lexington County Detention Center while he awaits a bond hearing.

17-year-old charged in shooting

Deputies have charged a 17-year-old male in connection with a weekend shooting in Swansea.

The accused shooter, whose name will not be released because he’s under the age of 18, is charged with 2 counts of attempted murder, armed robbery, discharging a firearm into a vehicle, unlawful possession of a pistol and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to arrest warrants.

“The 17-year-old and a co-defendant we’re still working to identify and locate arranged to sell a handgun Friday night,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “The shooting happened after the co-defendants took the money from the would-be buyers.”

The underage suspect turned himself in at the Sheriff’s Department Sunday, according to Koon.

He’s being held in the Lexington County Detention Center after a magistrate judge denied him bond.
