Notice the lovely signs of spring

Did you see a yellow sky last weekend? And maybe you sneezed an “ahchooooooo” or two.

That was our all familiar spring pollen.

Powder-like pollen came along with spring that began March 20.

Yards have burst forth with blooms and color from flowering trees, bulbs and plants. Even retail stores present spring colors in clothing and home accessories. Your vehicle may have turned yellow. Spring has sprung. Finally my winter fat is gone. Now I have spring rolls.

Signs of spring are:

• Birds are singing. Backyard birds are one of the best predictors. A weather proverb states, “Bluebirds are a sign of spring; warm weather and gentle south breezes they bring.” Bluebirds do not come north until all chance of winter has passed and they are assured an ample food supply.

• Trees are budding, sap is flowing. Observe the buds on your trees. Some of the first trees to bud are the willows and silver maples, followed by red maples. Another sign is the flowing sap. The sugar sheds are firing up in New Hampshire right now.

• Peepers are peeping. As soon as the ponds and wetlands thaw, you’ll hear the spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer) and the western chorus frog (Pseudacris triseriata). These tiny amphibians sing loudly, creating quite a chorus at dusk!

• Fresh, soft scents. Notice that entrancing smell of spring? The Earth is awakening and it does indeed smell more, well, earthy. • Butterflies and bumblebees return. Both are pollination wizards.

“Spring is the time of the year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” – Charles Dickens

My favorite springtime fashion accessories are antihistamines.

AS MORE of us receive our covid vaccinations, we are coming out after hibernating for a year. Events are planned and businesses are open. Beginning this week all adults 16 plus can get vaccinated.

ONE OF OUR very own, Lexington artist Emily Lide Ward is displaying her acrylics in area shops and available for pop-up shows. Her specialty is pet portraits. Just a thought for a Father’s Day gift. Emily is the daughter of Carol and Dee Lide of Lexington.

EASTER EGGS, hams and cheerful baskets are coming up Sunday. My favorites are Cadbury creme eggs, marshmallow peeps, jelly beans and chocolate bunnies.

The woven containers represent nests and new life, especially when filled to the brim with eggs. Plus, they’re a way to collect goodies on your Easter egg hunt.

ANNE BULL has good news for all of us procrastinators. The IRS has extended your individual income tax filing until May 17.

LEXINGTON Baptist Church plans public outdoor Easter services Sunday at the Blowfish Ballpark at 9 am and 11 am. Water bottles will be provided for all and activity bags with snacks for children. You may choose to sit in stadium seats or bring your own lawn chairs or blankets and sit on the field. This is a community wide event for people of all ages.
