Our friend Ruth King tells us she’s just back from hiking in the New Hampshire mountains. Smart girl. She didn’t think about business for 3 whole days.

How do you take a break when the phone rings off the hook, sales fly fast and everyone including you is working overtime? You can’t justify 3 days to hike. What can you do to clear your mind?

Ruth tells dispatchers that after a bad call or at least every hour, get up, walk around and clear your head.

Take at least 30 minutes at lunch to get away. You’ll come back refreshed. You’ll sound better on the phone and feel better.

After work, go home and do something physical. It could be as simple as pulling weeds in your garden, going for a walk with your dog or trying a new recipe for dinner.

As a business owner or manager, call or stop by to see good customers just to check on them and see if you can be of help.

Owners and managers can surprise their teams with donuts and coffee, ice cream or a pizza lunch. They will appreciate it.

Get out of the office. Do something that you normally don’t do – for at least a few minutes every day, Ruth suggests.

Time away from your business gives your brain something else to focus on. And you’ll find great ideas pop into your head while you are not focusing on work.
