Planned Parenthood sues governor

Planned Parenthood wants a judge to overturn Gov. Henry McMaster’s order denying it Medicaid payments.

The provider argues the order will deny thousands of poor women Medicaid-covered pelvic exams, birth control or sexually transmitted disease testing.

Planned Parenthood accused McMaster of breaking federal law which allows patients to visit any provider that accepts Medicaid payments.

McMaster’s order banned any group that performs abortions from being a Medicaid provider.

According to www.fact-check.org, abortions represent 3% of total services provided by Planned Parenthood. The group receives federal money, but it cannot be used for abortions by law.

Planned Parenthood received around a third of its total funding from “government grants and contracts” in 2009, according to FactCheck.

The Title 10 Family Planning Program and Medicaid provided $363.2 million in funding in 2009.

According to the Department of Health and Human Service’s website, “by law, Title 10 funds may not be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.”

Medicaid funding is restricted to abortion cases involving rape, incest, or endangerment to the life of the mother.

According to Planned Parenthood’s website, the basic primary and preventive health care services provided by Title 10 include wellness exams, lifesaving cervical and breast cancer screenings, birth control and contraception education, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

In 2016 alone, health centers used Title 10 funds to provide 720,000 Pap tests, more than 4 million STD tests (including HIV tests), and nearly 1 million women with breast exams.

Spokesman Brian Symmes says McMaster will fight the lawsuit as hard as he can because he doesn’t think taxpayer money should go to abortions.
