Preseason Classics, Sportsarama are back

Posted

Covid-19 limited the number of preseason Jamborees and Classics last year.

This year, 3 events are planned for Aug. 13 prior to the start of the regular season.

The Lexington County Sportsarama will make its reappearance after a 1-year hiatus. This year, the 4 scrimmages are scheduled to take place at Pelion High School starting at 6:30 pm:

•White Knoll vs. Batesburg-Leesville

•Lexington vs. Swansea

•River Bluff vs. Gilbert

•Pelion vs. Lakewood

The same night, the Joe Turbeville Classic is set at WC Hawkins Stadium. There will be 2 1st half scrimmages starting at 6:30 pm between Laurens and May River, followed by host team Irmo vs. Fairfield-Central at 7:30 pm

Over in Chapin, the Aun and McKay Kickoff Classic will take place at Cecil Woolbright Stadium. Along with host team Chapin, Gray Collegiate, Barnwell, Westwood, Newberry, Blythewood, Mid Carolina and Spring Valley will take part in the 4-game scrimmage.

Chronicle teams on TV

WACH Fox 57 released its 2021 high school football Sonic Friday Night Rivals television schedule which will include 4 matchups involving Chronicle Country teams.

The Week 2 contest is a non-region All-Lexington County matchup at Leonard Price Stadium between Lexington and Gilbert. It’s only the 3rd meeting ever between the Wildcats and Indians, the home team splitting the previous matchups.

Lexington head coach Perry Woolbright’s father, Marty, is the winningest head coach in Gilbert history. Current head coach Chad Leaphart has led the program to 3 Region 5-3A titles and 49 victories during his tenure.

On Oct. 1, 5-time defending Class 5A champion Dutch Fork heads to the Wolves Den to face White Knoll in a Region 5-5A matchup. The Timberwolves are coached by former Silver Foxes’ defensive coordinator Nick Pelham.

Back-to-back games with Chronicle Country teams will follow starting Oct. 15. It’s a Region 4-4A matchup between defending Class 4A champion AC Flora and Irmo.

Falcons’ head coach Dustin Curtis is quite familiar with visits to WC Hawkins Stadium from his days playing at Lexington High School. The following week, Cecil Woolbright Field will be the site of another Region 5-5A contest. Host team Chapin invites River Bluff in a game with potential playoff implications.
