Ratepayers sue SCE&G over settlement

Posted

Attorneys have filed a lawsuit against SC Electric & Gas over a failed nuclear settlement.

The settlement was reached in November for $2 billion in relief for ratepayers. However, it was not given final approval.

The attorneys for Richard Lightsey, LeBrian Cleckley, Phillip Cooper and other ratepayers say they believe the settlement would violate their clients’ due process rights.

The lawsuit also states that the attorneys’ fees, which total more than $63 million, are “outrageously high and patently unreasonable.”

“If SCE&G wants this case settled, it better get reasonable and come to the bargaining table with more money for the ratepayers,” attorney Robert Dodson told WISTV.

“If Pete Strom and the other lawyers want this case settled, they better get reasonable, too. Over $63,000,000 in attorneys’ fees is not reasonable.

“We will not stand idly by and allow this settlement to be approved. We will fight this to the bitter end if necessary.”
