Ray Smith’s 98-pound watermelon

Posted

When Ray Smith planted his Carolina Cross watermelon crop he didn’t dreamed one would grow so large.

Last week he took his whopper to Price’s Country Store. Everyone was amazed to see how big this watermelon had grown.

Price’s has a large scale and Smith’s watermelon topped out at 98 pounds. The staff took a picture of him holding his 98 lb. prize and put it on their Facebook page.

Gilbert Elementary’s logo is painted on their lobby wall. Gilbert artist Candace Cotterman Thibeault said the life size logo in school colors took over 10 hours to paint. Her art will be on display at the Rob Shaw Gallery on State Street in West Columbia in September.

Children can enjoy a bi-lingual story time video with Miss Mindi on the Gilbert-Summit Branch Library’s Facebook page. Miss Mindi reads “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” by Mo Williams in English and Spanish. Miss Mindi performs songs from the book in both languages. This story time video and others are available to watch anytime you wish. No date has been set for our Gilbert-Summit Branch Library to reopen. Books, videos and magazines can be reserved online and picked up at the library.
