SC senators oppose Trump trial

More Republican senators oppose an impeachment trial against former President Donald Trump.

South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott are among them.

That may leave Democrats unable to swing enough votes for a conviction.

29 GOP senators are against a trial, according to an Epoch Times tally.

They say it’s unconstitutional to try to convict a former office holder - and a waste of time.

“The 1st chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it,” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-FL, said.

Virtually all Democrats have said they’ll vote to convict Trump on a charge of incitement of insurrection.

The House of Representatives impeached Trump because they said his words led to the Jan. 6 breach of the US Capitol.

A timeline showed that Trump was still speaking when the violence at the Capitol started.

Those arrested have mainly been members of radical groups.

Democrats must convince at least 17 GOP senators to vote with them for the super-majority needed to convict.

No US president has been convicted but 3 have been acquitted, including Bill Clinton and Trump.

15 Republicans have expressed openness to voting to convict or haven’t ruled it out.

Among them are Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Susan Collins, R-ME.

Republican senators Thom Tillis and Richard Burr of North Carolina say they are open to voting to convict or haven’t ruled it out.

Georgia’s 2 new senators are both Democrats.
