School make-up day planned

Lexington-Richland School District 5 has announced a make-up day lost due to Hurricane Dorian.

Students in District 5 will attend school Monday, Oct. 7, which was previously scheduled as a Teacher Work Day/Parent Conference Day.

This will be an A Day for middle and high school students.

The decision to close schools on Sept. 5 was made out of caution for the safety of students, parents and staff due to strong winds and other expected impacts of Hurricane Dorian.

By state law, all school days missed because of snow, extreme weather conditions, or other disruptions requiring schools to close must be made up.

The law also requires school districts to designate annually at least 3 days within their school calendars to be used as make-up days.

Those dates approved in the 2019-2020 calendar for District 5 are Oct. 7, Oct. 25, Oct. 28, Feb. 17, March 13, March 16 and April 10.

District 2 will hold its first eLearning weather makeup day on November 11.

The district is one of 10 statewide to be selected for the 2nd phase of the eLearning program, which allows districts to continue lessons at home when classes on regularly scheduled school days are cancelled for inclement weather.

Nov. 11 was previously scheduled as a student/ staff holiday.

Elementary students will be required to have 200 minutes of independent work and must turn in assignments within 5 days of returning to school.

Middle and high school students require 240 minutes of independent work. Middle schoolers will have 5 days and high schoolers 3 days to turn in assignments.

Students who complete assignments will be counted “Present.”

Teachers will be available during the day to assist students with assignments.

K-2nd-graders will have paper-based eLearning assignments and activities - no electronic devices will be going home with them.

3rd- through 12th-graders will have their electronic devices (iPads/ Google Chromebooks) to take home.
