SCHSL football season extended a week into November

As expected, the SC High School League has added an extra football week.

The committee voted 18-0 Tuesday to move Week 4, postponed by Hurricane Florence, to Nov. 2. This pushes back the start of the playoffs to Nov. 9 and the “Weekend of Champions” to Dec. 6-7.

“The devestations that our community and some of our schools are going through is truly traumatic,” Commissioner Jerome Singleton said. “We’re hoping that this helps creates some form of normalcy. Right now, the committee is adament about how long we extend the season of football. So we’re right at one week at this point.”

Schools still have the option of either cancelling or making up those games before the extended week. However, Singleton has restricted game scheduling to over 4 days apart.

White Knoll and Gray Collegiate, which have byes this Friday, will play their Week 4 games at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The following 7 games involving Chronicle Country teams could also be rescheduled at the end of the season:

• Lower Richland at Airport

•Lexington at Batesburg-Leesville

•Chapin at Spring Valley

•Blythewood at Dutch Fork

•Dreher at Gilbert

•River Bluff at Irmo

•C.A. Johnson at Pelion

In addition, the committee unanimously allowed Singleton to contact the non-football fall sports to see about an extension.

Meanwhile, SCISA said Monday it would not extend its football regular season. Northside Christian cancelled its home game, while W.W. King played its Week 4 contest at Laurens Academy on Sept. 13, a 36-0 loss. The Week 5 schedule is available in the Fish Wrapper and at www.lexingtonchronicle.com .
