Scout’s project to benefit youth with cancer

Posted

A local Boy Scout has created an Eagle Scout service project to battle cancer.

Christian Norris of Troop 312 in Irmo learned that the worst cancers in Latin America are in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico where his mother was born.

Norris partnered with Casa Feliz, an organization that provides meals, housing and treatments for children with cancer whose families can’t afford them.

He raised money by selling his used school uniforms and working with other Scouts to host a car wash, coordinate and host a food event at a church in Palm Beach, FL, and created a Go-FundMe page for donations.

Norris used 100% of proceeds to pay a metal shop to make heart-shaped collection bins to recycle plastic bottle caps, a common practice in Mexico.

A private Mexican company donated 10,000 print ed recyclable collection bags, the equivalent of a $6,500 donation. The company wanted to ensure that the collection of the bottle caps continued and had Scouts distribute the bags.

A bottle cap recycler will donate the funds to Casa Feliz.

Norris aimed to deliver 5 collection bins but the project has already produced 20.

The Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta, the Latin American Association of Georgia and Congressman Joe Wilson’s office have shared their support.

The 5-foot bins can hold 312 lbs. of recyclable plastic – enough to pay for cancer treatments for 16-17 children every six days.

Those interested in making a donation can visit Norris’ GoFundMe page.
