Our Gilbert-Summit Senior Center will have its annual summer’s end party Friday, August 16, at the multi-purpose gymnasium. Director Donna Neel tells us members from all Senior Centers in Lexington County are looking forward to this event. Members will have a picnic and will be treated to hamburgers, hot dogs, and other tasty delights. Dancing to a lively DJ, door prizes, fellowship and having a photo session are planned.

Neel said some members are practicing for the upcoming billiards competition. Crafters are busy making Christmas ornaments and other items for their fall fund-raisers for Meals on Wheels. She said they are always welcoming volunteers to help at the GSSC. For information, call 892-5745.

First Baptist Church of Gilbert will have its annual Teacher’s Luncheon August

16. For over 15 years, the church has provided a luncheon and school supplies for teachers at each of our Gilbert Schools. Volunteers and members have been bringing school supplies to the church for several weeks. Teachers will be able to chose what they need for their classrooms. The luncheon is an appreciation and thank you for teachers and staff.

Everyone is invited to a 1950s Sock Hop evening of dancing, food, fellowship and just plain fun. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6740 at Lake Murray wants everyone who attends to wear 1950s attire and, if you have a classic 1950s car, drive that to the dance. Ken and Pam Martin will be the DJs. They will play music of the era and guests can sing their favorite song to karaoke. Tradition Sock Hop food will be served, which includes hamburgers, French fries, and root beer ice cream floats. The cost is only $5 for the hop, which begins at 5 pm. The VFW Post 6740 is at 950 Rock N Creek Road. Take US 378 towards Saluda and turn on Old Lexington Road. Go one mile to Rock N Creek and turn left.

“DayOne,” an annual event that unites all Lexington School District 1 moms in prayer, will be held on August 20 at Mount Horeb UMC, 1205 Old Cherokee Rd. Dr. Greg Little, superintendent of Lexington One, is the guest speaker. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 am and with prayers 9-10 am. Childcare is available upon registration. Attendees are asked to bring a school supply donation. Registration can be made at www.dayonelexington.org . Madelyn Mathias of Gilbert is helping coordinate this event. Call her at 803-429-1166, or call Freida Areheart at 803-359-3495.
