Some of our children suffer poverty

Most of us in Lexington County are fortunate.

We don’t face the crushing poverty rates others do elsewhere.

The US has the 7th highest child poverty rate among economically developed countries.

That’s a finding of personal-finance website WalletHub.

The 2019 States with the Most Under-privileged Children study examined socioeconomic welfare, health and education.

It found SC 14th for most under-privileged children

Our state ranked 12th most under-privileged in socio-economic welfare, 14th in health and 20th in education.

For welfare of children in South Carolina, the study found we are:

• 8th for children in households with below-poverty income.

• 9th for maltreated children.

• 21st for child food-insecurity.

• 24th for uninsured children.

• 16th highest infant mortality.

• 5th for children in single-parent families.

The most under-privileged children were found in the District of Columbia, New Mexico and West Virginia.

The least were in Connecticut, New Hampshire and New Jersey.
