Special Olympians visit the beach

Lexington 4’s Special Olympics Program took part in the fall games at Myrtle Beach October 25-27.

22 students from Swansea High School participated. They joined approximately 1,500 athletes and partners from across South Carolina to compete in events such as soccer, flag football, and bocce.

The opening ceremony included dinner, the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg with the lighting of the cauldron, and entertainment from the Coastal Carolina cheerleaders.

During this time, Hunter Ray, an athlete from Swansea High School participating in flag football, discovered that his picture was on the cover of the program for the weekend. He signed autographs for peers in attendance.

The athletic events and Olympic Town were held on the Coastal Carolina University campus.

7 students participated in soccer, earning a silver medal. The 7 students competing in flag football earned bronze. Bocce had 4 teams and received medals: 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

Olympic Town is a combination of games and healthy activities. Volunteers performed vision and hearing screenings for any interested special Olympics athlete.

There was time for relaxation to enjoy the beach when athletes were not competing. The weekend served as a wonderful bonding time between the students with disabilities and their peer partners.
