State fair safety tips

The South Carolina State Fair opened yesterday. Amidst all the excitement, it can be easy to forget to keep safety in mind. Follow these tips to have fun and stay safe at one of fall’s most anticipated events.

• Comfort first. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and supportive shoes. Don’t wear valuable jewelry in case you lose it while walking around or on a ride.

• Prevention is key. Hydrate before, during and after your fair excursion to avoid dehydration. Limit your consumption of sugary and alcoholic beverages. Wear sunscreen, even if it’s cloudy.

• Establish a home base. Scope out where the first-aid and emergency stations are located as well as establish a meet-up spot in case your group gets separated.

• Do a little research. Usually fairs utilize one company for providing the rides. Do a quick Google search on the company and check their history for any safety concerns.

• Take a picture it really will last longer. Get a photo of children before leaving the house so you can instantly recall what they were wearing.

• Stay Alert. Pickpockets are everywhere. Keep purses closed and stash items in front pockets. If you notice someone acting suspiciously let a supervisor or police officer know.
