The Lexington County Blowfish are just one of the many sports organizations keeping a close eye on the corona virus pandemic.

However, summer collegiate baseball and the Coastal Plain League are monitoring the ever-changing situation and the Blowfish have their eyes set on May 28.

“We’re looking forward to Opening Night on Thursday, May 28th VS the Gastonia Grizzlies”, Blowfish co-owner Bill Shanahan shared. “As stated by our league, we continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

But we are looking ahead with excitement to our 15th season in the CPL and 6th in Lexington County.”

Social distancing and guidelines from government officials have impacted the upcoming media luncheon in April for the Blowfish.

“Based on the recommendations from the CDC and Gov. (Henry) McMaster, we will be postponing the April luncheon to a later date,” Shanahan said.

The Blowfish are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, a 15 team summer collegiate baseball league with teams in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.”

CPL Commissioner Justin Sellers recently made a statement in regards to its monitoring of the corona virus pandemic.

“We hope that things will change here for the better in the next few weeks to months,” Sellers said. “Fortunately, we do have some time on our side, so we’re just maintaining our current plan to operate. We’ll be monitoring the updates and go from there.”

Sellers said there are several options that were just starting to be explored, including a possible preseason/exhibition slate.

With most NCAA leagues cancelling its spring sports, Sellers floated the possibility of CPL spring training.

“With regards to our sport, spring training or preseason exhibition games might be options if we’re allowed to get out there and do those types of things,” he said. “In the past we’ve allowed preseason exhibitions a week in advance of the opening day for the league. Some teams have taken advantage of that and others have passed on it.

“That may be an option we pursue harder as a league should things start to look up.”
