Did you hear about the Facebook data leak? This month, a database with information from over 530 million Facebook users was made publicly available in an insecure database.

The data included phone numbers, full names, locations and some email addresses.

Facebook said this did not result from a new hack or data breach but was “scraped” in 2019. Web scraping is a technique for gathering information from a website.

Facebook said the data was taken from a now-defunct tool that allowed Facebook users to find one another by phone number.

Facebook told NPR it would not individually notify those whose data was scraped.

How can you see if your info was exposed? There are 2 free, reliable methods.

1. Visit https:// haveibeenpwned.com and enter your email or phone number. Don’t forget the +1 and the area code and hit enter. The phone number feature is new, in response to this particular breach.

2. Visit https://monitor.firefox.com . Enter your email address to set up a Firefox monitor account. If you already have an account for the Firefox browser or Mozilla VPN you can use it, instead. Either site will tell you if your email was breached.

The Firefox monitor can notify you by email if you’re part of future breaches. It also gives you details about past breaches. It can also track multiple emails.
