THE STREAK-BUSTERS

Irmo, Brookland-Cayce get big region wins at home

Posted

With exception to Dutch Fork, streaks in high school football can be ended on any given Friday.

In 2 different locations in Chronicle Country, a pair of 10th ranked teams earned 1-point victories over higher-ranked opponents. In each case, they capitalized off missed extra points to earn victories which snapped their respective winning streaks.

At WC Hawkins Stadium, Irmo rallied from 14 points down to defeat topranked and defending Class 4A champion AC Flora 28- 27. After Marcellus Lewis’ blocked PAT kept the score at 27-21, Irmo drove downfield 60 yards on 7 plays for the go-ahead score on quarterback Izayah Whiteside’s 2-yard touchdown run and PAT by Jose Villanueva with 2:14 left.

The victory snapped AC Flora’s 17-game winning streak and put Irmo in the driver’s seat for the Region 4-4A title. A Yellow Jackets’ win Friday at Westwood clinches a share of the region title, the program’s 1st since 2009.

Over at Fort Knox, Brookland-Cayce found itself in a similar battle with 6th ranked Gilbert. Like the Falcons, the Indians took a late lead but missed the extra point. This enabled the Bearcats to take the lead and win the game 35-34 on Tanner Staton’s 37-yard touchdown pass to Jamari Kennerly and PAT by John Allen Mower.

The win snapped Gilbert’s 13-game region win streak. It also further complicated the race for the top seed as Brookland-Cayce finds itself in a 4-way tie for 1st in Region 5-3A with Gilbert, Strom Thurmond and Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

The race should be withered down to 3 after Friday’s matchup between Gilbert and Strom Thurmond.

As for the aforementioned Silver Foxes, the 5-time defending Class 5A champions continue to roll along with their array of streaks:

•57 straight games without a loss.

•56 straight victories versus in-state teams.

•32 straight road victories

•29 straight home games without a loss.

•28 straight home wins against in-state teams.

•27 straight region victories.

This past Friday saw the Silver Foxes add to another impressive achievement. THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK

The 48-0 win over River Bluff was the 15th shutout posted by Dutch Fork since 2016.

The Silver Foxes can accomplish another feat this Friday at home. A win over Lexington, which has won 6 straight games, clinches the program’s 12th consecutive region title - all under head coach Tom Knotts.

ALL-STAR GAME NEWS

On Monday, Dutch Fork wide receiver Antonio Williams was presented his jersey for the 2022 Under Armour All-America Game (see B2).

The game will take place Jan. 2, 2022 in Orlando, Fla.

Williams also learned Monday he was selected for the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives North-South All-Star Game in Myrtle Beach.

This year’s rosters will feature even more top senior players from South Carolina following the cancellation of the Shrine Bowl for the 2nd straight year.

“For the first time in its history, the best 88 players in the state will play in the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl,” game director Scott Earley said. “The South Carolina Athletics Coaches Association and the South Carolina Football Coaches Association are excited to witness these future collegiate stars in action. We believe, as always, that stars shine brighter at the beach.”

Gray Collegiate running back KZ Adams and offensive lineman Alec Coleman and Irmo safety Nick Emmanwari were picked for the North team coached by Calhoun County’s Wayne Farmer.

The South team will be led by head coach Art Craig of Timberland. Among the players selected with Williams were his teammate defensive back Jaden Kinard of Dutch Fork, wide receiver Zavier Short and offensive lineman Chase Sweigart of Chapin, offensive lineman Levi Gould of River Bluff, wide receiver Skylar King of Brookland-Cayce and tight end Gray Leaphart of Gilbert.

In addition to the game, the winner of “Mr. South Carolina Football” will be announced at halftime.

Players not selected to the North/South All-Star Game could play in the The Carolina Bowl Senior Showcase. It takes place the next day Dec. 12 at Gaffney High School at 4 pm and will feature 2 44-player rosters selected from North and South Carolina.

Event co-organizer Todd Helms said an agreement is in place between the 2 All-Star games to pick from the remaining players who are not former Carolina Bowl Youth Game players.
