Torrential rains broke early mill dam

Posted

Work is progressing on the reconstruction of the dam at the Old Mill which failed in the October 2015 flood.

That was not the 1st time the dam failed. Part of the dam collapsed on the afternoon of August 19, 1935, as torrential rains caused water to overflow the dam.

Workers were unable to open the spillway gates in time to prevent the dam from breaking.

The resulting flood destroyed several buildings downstream including a tourist camp owned by EL Taylor across US 1.

Repair work on the dam began in November of 1935.
