After two weeks, the Lexington County Blowfish have earned acclaim. Adjectives like “resilient”, “resolute” and “scrappy” best describe the team’s play through 10 games in the Coastal Plain League regular season.

Five of the games have been decided by two or less runs.

The Blowfish have four victories in which they pulled ahead with a ninth-inning rally.

The latest occurred Saturday at Grayson Stadium against the Savannah Bananas. Just two nights earlier, the Blowfish appeared to have victory sealed late, only to have the Bananas tie the game in the ninth and pull ahead in the 10th for the 9-8 win.

The Blowfish returned to Savannah mired in a 2-game losing skid and a scoreless stretch that reached 17 consecutive innings last Saturday as it trailed 4-0 going into the ninth inning.

Chaney Rogers started a 5-run comeback by reaching first base on an error. After a single by White Knoll graduate Carson “Mac” Macurdy, the Bananas struck out Chandler Redmond for the fourth time in the game and got Sean Parsons of River Bluff to hit into a fielder’s choice.

Rogers advanced to third and Parsons was on second with two outs when Chandler Jenkins drew a walk to load the bases.

Pinch hitter Hunter Lipscomb ended the scoreless streak with a RBI single to score Rogers.

Patrick Price of Gilbert High School followed with a 2-strike, 2-run single to make it 4-3.

Savannah changed pitchers, but the first batter faced Zack Spivey singled home Jenkins to tie the game. Spivey and Jenkins led the Blowfish with two hits each.

Aaron Adams of River Bluff scored Price with an infield single to cap the comeback.

It marked the second time this season Lexington County had scored five or more runs in the ninth inning.

Colton Rendon entered the game to close out the victory. After retiring the first two batters, he gave up a triple to Clay Dungan and walked Justin Dirden.

Trenton Nash looked to tie the game with a hit, butstruck out to end the game.

The fourth win of the season occurred 10 games earlier than last season when the Blowfish started 0-8.

“Once we figure out how to play a full game, like we play the second half of games, we’ll going be pretty tough,” Blowfish head coach Marshall McFadden said.

“Right now, we’re a pretty good team knowing that we really only score in the later innings of games. Once we figure how to play the whole game like the last couple of innings, we’re going to be pretty good.”

SIX EX-BLOWFISH

SELECTED IN DRAFT

The road to the big leagues continues to go through Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

Infielders Seth Lancaster (Coastal Carolina) and Madison Stokes (the University of South Carolina) shortstop Marshawn Taylor (Grambling), outfielder Brandt Stallings (Georgia Tech) and pitchers Cody Morris (South Carolina) and Gilbert native Mitch Spires (Winthrop) heard their names called in this year’s Major League Baseball draft.

Morris was selected in the seventh round by the Cleveland Indians. The righhander only threw four innings in two games last season for the Blowfish as he recovered from Tommy John surgery.

Both Lancaster and Stokes were picked by the Philadelphia Phillies. A member of the Chanticleers’ 2016 College World Series championship team, Lancaster was selected in the eighth round by the Philadelphia Phillies, while Stokes was chosen two rounds later. A third-round College Baseball All-American selection, Lancaster played two seasons with the Blowfish. Stokes played in the Blowfish’s inaugural season in Lexington and drove in 19 runs in 29 games.

Spires (Los Angeles Angels), Taylor (Arizona) and Stallings (Cincinnati) were all drafted in the 28th round. Spires played at Petersburg in 2015 and in Lexington with Stallings a year later. Taylor spent the last two seasons with the Blowfish.
