Want to spend $3.5 billion on a toll road?

What would you do if someone asked you for $3.5 billion for a toll road?

His only assurance would that you would recover your money in 35 years.

You would probably decide to keep your money.

That’s what state lawmakers decided after research showed that’s what it would cost to turn I-95’s 199 miles from Georgia to North Carolina into a toll road.

At lawmakers’ request, the SC Department of Transportation examined how much it would cost to build 4 toll booths at the interstate’s 4 bridges and how long it would take.

The study found it would take 35 years to produce the money to pay for it at an estimated cost of $3.5 billion.

The state has only 2 toll roads in Greenville County and on Hilton Head Island.

The proposed toll bill failed and was not included in the 2019-2020 budget.
