The SC Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Foundation has honored Nephron Pharmaceuticals’ owners.

Lou and Bill Kennedy have been awarded the 2021 Townes Award.

The award is named for Dr. Charles Townes, the visionary whose pioneering research led to the invention of the laser.

It recognizes those who have transformed South Carolina and the world.

Foundation Executive Director Beth Dinndorf said the Kennedys’ leadership and commitment have empowered future generations of scientists, engineers and innovators.

Said GSSM Interim President Danny Dorsel, “Charles Townes and Lou and Bill Kennedy are shining examples for these young minds to challenge themselves to be innovative and make a difference in our world.”

Nephron CEO Lou Kennedy said in her acceptance remarks, “Bill and I are deeply humbled and really excited to accept an award named in honor of an extraordinary South Carolinian who was able to achieve the Nobel Prize and the Templeton Prize, as well as many other things.”

Lou and Bill Kennedy are co-owners of Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation, a Lexington County manufacturer that develops and produces safe, affordable generic inhalation solutions and suspension products.

Some of those are used to treat severe respiratory distress symptoms associated with covid-19.
